Scientific Conference – “Byzantine Studies in Georgia – 5”

International Scientific Conference on Byzantine Studies in Georgia - 5 at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University has been opened on the topic: "The Black Sea and Black Sea Countries – The Crossroaads of Cultures and Civilizations in IV-XV Centuries". The purpose of the three-day conference is to present and promote the latest trends in modern Byzantine studies and the humanities in general, innovative methods and achievements in digital humanities in Georgia. 110 Georgian, Greek, German, English, American and Turkish scholars present scientific papers in the following eight sections: History, Source Studies; Art History, Architecture, Archeology, Numismatics; Language and Literature; Codicology, Textology, Translation and Philosophy, Religion, and Theology.

The opening ceremony of the international conference was closed with the performance of the church chant by the female choir, headed by Zaira Vadachkoria. A photo exhibition "Pontic Greeks in Adjara – the Past and the present" and an exhibition of paintings - “Alphabetic Prayer”  by calligraphist George Sisauri were also held.

The conference will include the screening of the documentary “The Story of the Twelve Cloister” by Professor Malkhaz Chokharadze

 The International Conference has been jointly held by Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Georgian National Union of Byzantine International Society, Academician G. Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies of Ilia State University, and Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and organized within the frames of sub-program for promoting higher education of The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Ajara AR.

The reports presented at the conference will be published in the conference proceedings.
