
The Academic Council of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University has awarded the title of an honorary doctor of BSU to Karl Kaser, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor of History and Anthropology and Head of the Institute of History at the University of Graz. Professor Karl Kaser has considerably contributed to the development of the university and the upbringing of future generations. The name of the prominent scientist is related to the development of visual anthropology in the European scientific sphere and the research in the field at BSU. He is the author of 11 significant monographs and numerous scientific articles.
Since 1980 Professor Karl Kaser has been delivering lectures in history and visual anthropology at the University of Graz. In 1985 he completed his post-graduate studies in Southeast European History and 1996 became a full professor of history and anthropology at the University of Graz. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota since 1991 and has been lecturing regularly at various European universities.
Professor Karl Kaser has been collaborating with Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University since 2011. Together with professors from South-West University "Neofit Rilski" in Bulgaria, he invited BSU professors: Tamaz Putkaradze, Kakhaber Surguladze and Marina Aroshidze to the EU-funded research project Seventh Framework Program for the Study of Cultural Memory. Researchers worked on the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 period. In 2012-2016, eight professors from the Faculty of Humanities and Ph.D. students (Rusudan Turmanidze, Elene Khajishvili, Khatuna Bolkvadze, Vepkhia Khalvashi, etc.) participated in the research project at various European universities (Austria, Bulgaria). Based on the researches in the field of cultural memory, four doctoral theses have been defended.
In 2016, under the supervision of Karl Kaser, the International Scientific Team, inviting BSU Professors Marine Aroshidze and Tamaz Putkaradze, began working. Their implemented grant project was funded by the EU under the Marie Curie-Sklodowska Foundation of Horizon 2020.
