The Child Rights Center Opens at BSU

The Child Rights Center has been opened and the Memorandum of Cooperation signed at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University; the event was organized by UNICEF. The document was signed by the BSU Rector Merab Khalvashi and UNICEF Representative in Georgia Ghassan Khalil. The opening ceremony was attended by honorary Guests- the Ambassador of Estonia Riina Kaljurand, the Ambassador of Norway Helene Sand Andersen, Eka Dgebuadze, First Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, Maia Khajishvili Minister of Education, Culture and Sport of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara, Chairman of the Human Rights Issues Committee of the Supreme Council of Autonomous Republic of Ajara Tsotne Ananidze. The aim of the center in to enhance the culture of children’s right,  encourage and protect realization of children’s rights.

The Child Rights Center will host the seminars, training sessions to create and disseminate knowledge in the direction of the children’s rights. The center will enhance the capacities of the university academic staff, students, teachers, school administration and parents to effectively establish the principles of child rights in Georgia. UNICEF ensures study programmes with syllabus on the child rights that will be considered as an elective or mandatory course in the study programmes; the child rights issues also will be reflected in syllabi of various subjects.

UNICEF plans to organize the Second International Conference in 2021 on the topic “Child Rights in the University Education”.

Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University has been cooperating with the UNICEF office since 2014. In 2014-2016, with the support of UNICEF and “Innove” Estonian Foundation of the Teacher Training Programme was established.

Since 2017 the university has been involved in the UNICEF, the Governments of Estonia and Georgia cooperation programme “To Enhance Access to Quality Education for Georgian Children” the aim of which was to increase the quality of preparatory university education for future pre-school and secondary education teachers. With the support of UNICEF in 9 Georgian high education institutions, including Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, primary education integrated Bachelor-Master Educational Programme has been prepared.
