OPENING OF THE NEW TEACHING AND RESEARCH SPACE –JEAN MONNET CHAIR -AT BSU TO CELEBRATE THE EUROPE DAY

To celebrate the Europe Day, the new Study and Research Space –Jean Monnet Chair was established within the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. The Jean Monnet Chair aims at popularization of the European values in the region as well as support the development of research and teaching on the European Union; establishment of the three new study courses, organization of academic activities, engagement of the youth and implementation of the research. The research space will house the literature and information on the European Union.

In the frame of the activities, the round table was organized on the topic “European Values, European Integration and Georgia”, were the University professors and teaching staff, students, administration, representatives of the Information Centre on NATO and European Union and the community took part. The event took place in the frame of the BSU Jean Monnet Chair project financed by the European Commission.  The Jean Monnet Chair holder at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University is Malkhaz Nakashidze, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Law and social Sciences.

The Europe Day is annually celebrated and is linked to the statement made by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in Paris on 9 May  1950, where the minister put forward the idea of the European Integration.  The implementation of Schuman’s initiative started in 1951 when the European Coal and Steel Association was established with the
