In the Research Institute of Phytopathology and Biodiversity of BSU, researches of strategic importance for the country are carried out in the direction of plant protection and food security such as: detecting plant diseases, diagnosing them, determining the degree of damage and developing methods of combating diseases. For the first time in Georgia, the scientists of the institute discovered and studied quarantine, dangerous diseases and pests of potatoes, boxwood, kiwi, hazelnut, blueberry and other economically important crops. The world's leading scientific organizations are interested in their research, and the research results are published in highly rated scientific publications. As a result of studies of Kolkheti peatlands, the forests and wetland ecosystems of Kolkheti have been awarded the status of a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
It should be noted that this year, the Institute started an important international project CARE SEA - "Collaboration and raising awareness of a pollution-free and ecologically clean Black Sea" on the pollution of the Black Sea and its impact.
