MACRO CLEAN is “Research, Cleaning Methodologies, Economic Valorization and Pilot Application for Macroalgal Blooms” is implemented under the Interreg NEXT Cross-Border Cooperation in the Black Sea Basin Programme, of which the Directorate for EU Affairs is the National Authority.  Project Partners include – Sinop University (Türkiye) – Lead Partner, Marmara Municipalities Union  (Türkiye), Batumi State University (Georgia), Shumen University (Bulgaria)

The Black Sea Region has been facing an increasing eutrophication problem in recent years. MACRO ALGEA project aims to reduce this problem and to provide environmental and economic benefits by using seaweeds in a sustainable way.
The objectives of project include establishing a comprehensive research methodology to study the effects of macroalgae on eutrophication, developing relevant laboratory infrastructure and increasing the economic benefits of seaweeds in fertiliser and bioplastic production. In addition, project priorities include raising awareness and encouraging cooperation among stakeholders in this process.

The project will conduct in-depth research on macroalgae with standardised protocols and effective data management practices. The laboratories of partner universities will be strengthened, and capacity building support will be provided to researchers. Feasibility plans will be prepared to assess the applicability of macroalgae for fertiliser and bioplastic production.

Furthermore, through workshops, training sessions, clean-up events and an international conference, project aims to raise awareness about seaweeds, eutrophication and sustainable resource use among our stakeholders and target audience. By sharing the project results, Project partners also aim to expand the network of cooperation and promote innovative cleaning processes and technologies.
