The Kolkheti Peatland and Aquatic Ecosystem Conservation Department of the Institute of Phytopathology and Biodiversity of BSU will assist the Republic of Turkmenistan in establishing a national park and developing a management plan. The project “Partnership for the Benefit of Water-Related Ecosystems” will start in April 2025. The project is funded by the Korean government within the framework of the BBI (Bio Bridge Initiative) of the Framework Convention on Biological Diversity.
The Global Water Partnership Central Asia and Caucasus, A(A)P "Inanch-Vepa" and the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan will be involved in the implementation of the project from the Turkmen side. Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University and the National Water Partnership Organization of Georgia will participate in the project from Georgia.
The main goal of the project is to develop the capabilities of Turkmenistan, promote the rational use of natural resources and support the development of environmentally friendly businesses. It is noteworthy that Turkmenistan currently does not have a wetland national park, which would allow reconciling the interests of environmentalists and local communities in the development of environmentally friendly businesses by benefiting from nature.
As part of the cooperation, a study tour is planned to the Kolkheti National Park, where Turkmen specialists will learn about international best practices in the establishment and functioning of national parks. The project will be implemented through a tripartite partnership, involving state organizations, scientific associations and expert organizations.
Detailed information about the project can be found on the official website of the Convention on Biological Diversity: https://www.cbd.int/biobridge/projects/selected
