International scientific cooperation between BSU and Goethe University Frankfurt - submission of a joint scientific project

International scientific cooperation between Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University and Goethe University Frankfurt continues. Today, the presentation of the joint scientific project “Linguistic Means of Manipulation in Modern Georgian Political Discourse” was held at BSU. The project is the winner of the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia’s Fundamental Research Grant Competition and was funded by the Foundation.

The project, in which researchers from Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University and Goethe University Frankfurt participate, continues the tradition of cooperation between Georgian and German universities. The project is headed by Manana Tandashvili, a professor at Frankfurt University and an honorary doctor of Batumi State University. Associate Professor Mzia Khakhutaishvili, postdoctoral student Tatia Tsetskhladze and doctoral student Anastasia Kamarauli are participating from BSU. The project aims to study linguistic means of manipulation in modern Georgian political discourse.

The project was presented at BSU Rector Tite Aroshidze was present. Plans for future cooperation were discussed at the meeting. It was planned to hold joint thematic international conferences, deepen cooperation, and conduct visits to both Batumi State University and Frankfurt University. Cooperation will be further strengthened in the field of Kartvelology, where the Goethe University of Frankfurt is one of the leading centers, and Batumi State University actively participates in the development of this direction.

The University of Frankfurt and Batumi State University have a 15-year history of scientific relations. A memorandum of scientific and educational cooperation between the universities was signed in 2011, and since then a number of successful projects have been implemented: the Batumi Summer School in Digital Humanities was established, which is held annually at Batumi State University; For the first time in Georgia, an accredited minor program in digital humanities was developed and introduced at BSU; in 2017, with the support of Frankfurt University, the first “Digital Humanities Center” in Georgia was opened at Batumi State University, where the scientific project “Batumi Linguo-Cultural Digital Archive” was successfully implemented; in addition, the scientific group has been actively studying Georgian political orality for several years, the result of which was the publication of the IV volume of “Modern Georgian Oral Discourse” in 2022.

In cooperation with Batumi State University, an international symposium “Digital Caucasology - Paradigm Shift” was held at Frankfurt University in 2023.

The winning project “Linguistic Means of Manipulation in Contemporary Georgian Political Discourse” in the Shota Rustaveli Georgian National Science Foundation grant competition will continue the tradition of cooperation with the two universities in the educational and scientific fields.
