Within the framework of the international research project “CauLaGeNet - Caucasian Languages Network in Georgia”, the International Summer School “CauLaGe - Caucasian Languages in Georgia” was opened at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. The summer school brings together students, professors and researchers from more than 10 countries around the world and is one of the most important international academic events in the field of Caucasian language research.

CauLaGeNet is an international project funded by the French National Research Council, which aims to study, describe, document and scientifically analyze the Caucasian languages spread in Georgia. The project brings together 10 partner research institutions from North America, Europe and Asia and 35 researchers specializing in the study of Caucasian languages. Representatives of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University and other scientific institutions are also involved in the network.

“CauLaGe” is a two-week international academic and field research summer school that combines theoretical training and practical research. Participants will master modern methods of general linguistics, and will engage in field linguistic research under the guidance of experienced scientists.

An important component of the program is joint scientific research, within the framework of which participants and professors will work together on the description and analysis of languages spread in Georgia. As a result of the research, new scientific materials will be created that will contribute to the development of linguistic research.

The summer school is jointly organized by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University. The event is one of the main academic activities of the international network CauLaGeNet.

The 2026 program will involve 50 students, young researchers and specialists, including 20-25 professors and leading scientists from various universities and research centers around the world.

The main direction of this year's research is the documentation and study of the Abkhazian language in the village of Peria. The goal of the program is the scientific study and documentation of less described languages in Georgia. In previous years, the project conducted research on the Tsova-Tush (Batsburi) language, as a result of which a long-term international research base was established in Kakheti, Zemo Alvani.

The research is fully academic and descriptive in nature. It includes the study of the grammatical system of the language, structured interviews, analysis of linguistic meanings, testing of grammatical constructions and documentation of linguistic features using modern linguistic methods.

The summer school will be held from July 3-17 at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University and Peria Public School.

The International Summer School “CauLaGe Peria 2026” will contribute to the scientific documentation of languages in Georgia, deepen international academic cooperation, support the professional development of young researchers, and promote Georgia as an important center for international linguistic research.
