
An educational meeting was held at Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University on the occasion of the International Day for the Conservation of Wetlands Protected by the Ramsar Convention. The event, titled "Love the Ocean: Love the Black Sea", was held within the framework of the 2025 Ramsar Convention slogan - "Protecting Wetlands for Future Generations".
The meeting was organized within the framework of two important international projects: the CARE SEA project of the EU Interreg NEXT Programme for the Black Sea Basin Countries and the DOORS Black Sea (Developing Optimal and Open Research Support for the Black Sea) programme of Horizon 2020. The organizers included "Geographic" LLC and "Georgian Greens Movement - Friends of Georgia".
The event was attended by students from Batumi Public Schools and St. Andrew's Gymnasium, as well as students from various levels of the Biology Department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Health Care of Tbilisi State University.
Scientist Izolda Machutadze gave a presentation on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site "Colkheti Wetlands and Wetlands". Special attention was paid to the importance of conserving the freshwater ponds of the Chorokhi Delta, which is a potential site for the Ramsar Convention.The meeting was also attended by Rezo Goradze, Senior Research Fellow at the Colkheti Peatlands and Aquatic Ecosystems Conservation Department of the Georgian State University, who discussed the issue of stranded dolphins on the Black Sea coast, and Natela Tetemadze, Research Fellow at the same department, who spoke about the need for biomonitoring of atmospheric air pollution in Batumi.
The event aimed to raise awareness among young people about the importance of conserving wetlands and the sustainability of the Black Sea ecosystem.
