
Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University hosted an official closing ceremony of a long-term education programme of a Practicing Agronomist implemented in the frame of USAID/REAP project. USAID Deputy Mission Director Thomas Morris and the representatives of the organization met Mr. Merab Khalvashi, the Rector of the University, learnt about the education programmes of the university and visited the labs and clinics opened with the support of the United States Agency for International Development.
The participants of the education programme were awarded with the certificates by Mr. Avtandil Meskhidze, the Minister of Agriculture of Autonomous Republic of Ajara, Mr. Merab Khalvashi, the Rector of the University and Mr. Thomas Morris, the USAID Deputy Mission Director.
USAID/REAP project made it possible to implement a successful long-term education programme of a Practicing Agronomist in cooperation with regional universities. The programme which involved 11 regions was comprised of two phases: theoretical course in Basics of Agronomy and practical work with the focus on agricultural crops appearing to be the essential source of income for farmers. The programme envisages getting familiarized with the following issues: soil and climate conditions, basics of agricultural crop rotation, current and modern technologies of soil cultivation, management of soil fertility, basics of integrated system of plant protection, typical for the region and perspective agricultural crops as well as soil moisture management, possibilities of development of agricultural production in open and closed soil conditions and basics of financial analysis of agricultural production.
